About
Stan Strembicki was born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1952. He arrived at the University of Rhode Island as a theater student, took a photography course on a whim, and never looked back.
He earned a BFA in Photography and Studio Art from the University of Rhode Island in 1975 and an MFA in Photography from the California Institute of the Arts in 1977. After teaching in Connecticut, he joined Washington University in St. Louis in 1982 as head of photography, served as Director of Graduate Studies and Assistant Dean, and founded the school's study abroad program in Italy. He retired in 2018 as Professor Emeritus after 36 years, and has led photography workshops in Florence since 1990.
He first visited New Orleans in 1984 and has photographed more than thirty Mardi Gras since. Thirty days after Hurricane Katrina he began documenting the city's recovery, and he continues to photograph the rebuilding of the Lower 9th Ward and its faith communities. He also works as a freelance photographer for architectural design and build firms and for commissioned portraits.
His work has been exhibited widely in the United States and Europe and is held in collections including the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Joslyn Art Museum and the Kinsey Institute. He lives in St. Louis.
